U16's Italy Maori Battalion Tour
A journey of whakapapa, education, culture and rugby
Mana Rugby’s U16 Māori Battalion Italy Tour will provide an opportunity for both U16 tāne and U16 kōtiro to travel to Italy in April 2027, develop through rugby, learn through history and culture, and grow as confident, connected young people.
This is more than a rugby tour. It is a journey centred on whakapapa, remembrance, education, hauora, leadership and personal development. Our rangatahi will carry the Mana Rugby kaupapa as they follow in the footsteps of the 28th Māori Battalion and honour the courage, sacrifice and mana of those who came before them.
Eligible players are those who turn 16 or younger during 2027.
Rugby, History and Whakapapa
Both our U16 tāne and U16 kōtiro will have the opportunity to test themselves through rugby while travelling through places connected to the history of the 28th Māori Battalion.
The tour will bring together rugby development, cultural learning and historical education. Through the experience, our rangatahi will develop as players while gaining a deeper understanding of service, sacrifice, leadership and the importance of whakapapa.
They will return not only as improved rugby players, but as proud young people who understand the responsibility of carrying their whānau, culture and kaupapa with mana.
Two Cultures, One Connection
Our tāne and kōtiro will experience the people, history and culture of Italy while building connections through shared values such as whānau, respect, courage, hospitality and pride in heritage.
The tour will also provide an opportunity for our rangatahi to share Māori culture with the communities they visit. Through kapa haka, karakia, waiata, kōrero and everyday connection, they will represent their whānau and Aotearoa with humility and pride.
This exchange will help our young people understand that while cultures may be different, strong relationships are built through respect, openness and shared experiences.
